<p>This article examines the role of electronic monitoring as an alternative form of punishment in European criminal justice systems. A trend toward the increasing multifunctional use of electronic monitoring during pre-trial proceedings, sentencing, and enforcement is identified. The common features and differences between electronic monitoring models in use in Europe are analyzed. The need to consider risk criteria when assigning this alternative to imprisonment is emphasized. The author concludes that, in any case, electronic monitoring should contribute to reducing the growth of prison populations, stabilizing self-control mechanisms, and, consequently, reducing recidivism rates.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>электронный мониторинг</kwd><kwd>уголовное правосудие</kwd><kwd>альтернативные формы наказания</kwd><kwd>тюремное заключение</kwd><kwd>критерии риска</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>electronic monitoring</kwd><kwd>criminal justice</kwd><kwd>alternative forms of punishment</kwd><kwd>imprisonment</kwd><kwd>risk criteria</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><ref id="ref1"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">Bishop, N., Schneider, U.
